Ravine is a first attempt at layering watercolours on an absorbent surface so as to capture the sharp edges and smooth faces of the rock formation seen in the background of the image. It was also rendered to limit the use of white colour, and allow the colour of the paper itself to fill in the white areas such as the waterfalls and highlights. The image depicts a short waterfall in a secluded ravine located within the Blue Mountains region of Jamaica. Depth was the focus when rendering this image by using only darker shades of violet and brown for shadows, rather than black which would make the composition seem too unnatural.
