Sumi-e is a type of East Asian ink wash brush painting, whose stylized features are meant to capture the “soul” or “emotional” qualities associated with its subject rather than realistic representation. The image shown is a cliff overlooking the Hagley Gap region, of the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park, Jamaica. Emphasis is placed primarily on the different peaks and values in an attempt to capture, and convey a sense of depth and texture. Like many landscape images this one tells a story. The cottage located at the very centre of the image is meant to give one a sense of humankind, living in perfect harmony with nature.
